Most people don’t take snoring seriously, but it can be a serious problem and can cause serious complications both to your health and your relationship if the noises you make keeps others awake at night. You might say that your snoring is nothing special, but tell it to the partner who is kept awake night after night and forced to listen to the snorting, wheezing, and monotonous noises you make in your sleep.
His or her lack of sleep is called environmental insomnia, and they can experience such myriad symptoms as extreme fatigue, headaches, and concentration problems throughout the day. And all of them are caused by the snoring noises you make at night. Not to mention the fact that lack of sleep can tend to suppress an interest in sex, which may strain an already strained relationship. Many couples solve their sleeping problems by keeping separate bedrooms, away from the one who snores.
Many people don’t even realize they are snoring until their partner tells them, and indeed, most people who have their snoring evaluated or seek any kind of help for their condition do so at their partner’s urging.
Snoring occurs when your airway becomes partially blocked in the back of the mouth, where the tongue, uvula, upper throat, and soft palate meet. The snoring noise you hear is caused when any of these structures rub together and create vibrations.
Some common causes of snoring are:
- Excess weight, which narrows your airways and makes it much more likely that the structures in the back of the mouth will rub together.
- Nasal congestion, either from allergies or a cold.
- Alcohol.
- Medications with a sedating effect.
- Deviated septum.
Snoring is a serious problem, and you may not be the only one affected. It can take a toll on your health, and on the health of your relationship. Problem snoring should not to be taken lightly.
